Hand and Mouth Switches
There are tens, if not hundreds, of types of freefall camera switches in use today. Many are custom built by the jumper while several are available for purchase from various manufacturers. Whether you buy one or make it yourself, it must be able to do the job consistently. The last thing you need is to find out you missed the shot of the century due to a bad connection or failed switch. I recommend and have built the following types of switches:

1) Hand switch using a momentary pushbutton - A simple but effective switch for BASE jumping that includes a rod with a finger ring. The momentary pushbutton at the end is triggered by your thumb which is connected to a two-conductor cable. This cable is typically connected to a 1/32" (2.5mm) stereo jack for insertion into your still camera. Just remember that you need the largest size (lowest gauge) wire possible that will fit properly into your jack connection. The larger the wire, the more effective the voltage/current transfer to trigger the camera.

Mouth Switch

2) Mouth (tongue) switch using a momentary pushbutton - Custom made using a football mouthpiece that is supported with a lexan crossbrace and glued into place. The crossbrace then supports the switch which is triggered by pushing your tongue to the roof of your mouth. Your tongue will naturally lay under the switch and will not accidentally trigger the switch like other "bite" and "blow" switches. A two-conductor cable protrudes from the switch between your teeth and out to a 1/32" (2.5mm) stereo jack. Just remember that you need the largest size (lowest gauge) wire possible that will fit properly into your jack connection. The larger the wire, the more effective the voltage/current transfer to trigger the camera.

Mouth Switch

Both of the above switches are shown with 1/32" (2.5mm) stereo jacks with two wires. This jack is the standard for connections to several 35mm SLR and a few point and shoot cameras available today. However, newer digital cameras require different jacks. If you cannot find the appropriate jack, try purchasing a manual shutter release switch and remove the jack. If you'd rather purchase a complete system, visit the Conceptus Camera Switches.
